Dressing Up the Yard

I was just working in the yard and couldn't help but think about things I'd like to do with it once time and sunshine permit next year. Since our house is an old craftsman, I'm drawn to the idea of incorporating antique elements as focal pieces throughout the yard.

These garden beds grown inside of old dresser drawers are so charming, aren't they?  I also love the idea of repurposing the drawers themselves as stand-alone planter boxes. Very wallet-friendly!

Mixology Monday: Mellow Melon Margaritas

After cleaning the house like a mad woman this weekend, I rewarded myself with some downtime, a good book, and a nice stiff drink. It's been awfully hot in Seattle lately so I was looking for something light and refreshing to quench my thirst. Lots of cocktails fit the bill, but I finally settled on a watermelon margarita.

Holy smokes! My margaritas will never again taste the same. The obvious perk for me with this drink was the watermelon, but combined with agave nectar and a little lime, this drink is to die for. It's a delicious little slice of summer.

If you like watermelon, take some time out and enjoy this one before the fall rolls around. You won't be disappointed.

Wordy Eggs, A Novel Idea

Hello readers! It's been a while. Apologies for being MIA last week. We've been out of town working on the family cabin renovations. The good news is that it's starting to look awesome! Will post pictures later this week.

In other news... isn't this wordy egg tutorial awesome? I love those little birds nests with robin eggs that shabby chic fans like to put everywhere and this offers a nice alternative, especially if you choose pages from a favorite poem or novel. So cute!

Friday Funny

One of my favorite sports to watch during the Olympics is women's gymnastics.  These ladies are all adorable little powerhouses with a fierceness that I really admire. That's why it was so difficult to watch McKayla Maroney miss out on the gold this year for her vault exercise. She was clearly not impressed with her performance. But there's a bright side to everything, which is why the McKalya Maroney Is Not Impressed meme is so fantastic. Failure doesn't have to be a bad thing. Laugh a little!

McKayla is not impressed with the royal wedding.

Not impressed by the most iconic Beatles scene ever to be captured

Not impressed by Nicolas Cage or his Oscar win

Adorable Pet Accessories

Mashable typically has a great beat on all things relevant and their latest post is no exception. I've definitely seen some of these items on Etsy and Amazon, but some of them look homemade. It makes me wonder if our pet would ever wear something like this. My guess is no, since she's a bit of a rogue kitty and likes to do her own thing...

What do you think? Would you ever dress up your pet? Share your photos if you have 'em!

Finding Greatness - Get Out There and Run!

Nike's latest Olympics ad campaign challenges consumers to find their greatness and offers unexpected inspiration in the form of an overweight, out of shape teenage boy.  What's so awesome about this particular commercial is that it doesn't feature some hyped-up athlete or untouchable celebrity. It's simple, brilliantly executed, and makes you want to get outside and pound the pavement.

Well done, Nike!

Mixology Monday

I had the pleasure of going to a Fiona Apple concert last week with my friend Sonya. We had some time to kill before the show so we stopped into a cute little Mexican restaurant called The Saint.

Although most of their drinks feature tequila,  I went off the beaten path and ordered the Old and Nutty. It's made with Old Crow Bourbon, fresh ginger, orange bitters and a healthy sprinkling of nutmeg...and it tastes like heaven. I love that it doesn't have anything too out of the ordinary in it so it can be recreated at home.

Cheers!

Pixar's Guide to Stellar Storytelling

A writer for Pixar recently shared some of her tips for creating a great story.  Given that I'm a huge Pixar fan, it's interesting to compare some of these ideas with what I've noticed in their films. Spot on, really, and an inspiration. There's an incredible amount of thought that goes into making their masterpieces!
