Getting A Bit Girly

A Matter of Style recently posted this brilliant idea for saving eye shadows, blushes and other delicate, powdery make-up after the mold breaks.  What woman out there hasn't dropped a make-up container or two before?  If you're like me, you cry about it for a few and then you toss the broken pieces into the trash and pray you don't make the same mistake again, though inevitably, you will.  Fear no more!  The next time it happens, remember this quick trick:

Pour a few drops of alcohol into the container. Use a bottle cap to press the powder back together.  Then wait a while for the alcohol to evaporate and go back to enjoying your morning routine!

Incredible Things

If you've never been to the site Incredible Things, you may be missing out on reviews of some of the coolest gadgets out there.

Take this, for example. It's such a simple idea, but so brilliantly useful!  I am constantly looking for my keys. Inevitably, they end up buried beneath groceries or tucked away in the dirtiest crevasses of my gigantic purse.  BUT,  with a light switch like this, I'd never have to wonder where I put my keys again.

Lunch Boxes Galore!

It's hard to believe that Labor Day weekend is just around the corner.  Where did the summer go?  Weren't we just celebrating the 4th of July yesterday?  I love the fall (it's my favorite season) so I'm hardly disappointed, but I'm not quite ready to give up my sunshine.  Boo, hiss!

I'm just gonna have to suck it up and deal with it and find a way to have fun even without the sun.  First things first:  I'm considering investing in a cool lunch box to boost my spirits on dreary, rainy lunch days.  I keep seeing lunch boxes in window displays all over town, which makes sense since the school year is about to begin for all the teeny tots and college kiddos out there.

First thought:  that's so Seattle.  This city wears it's eco-compliance like a badge of honor.  It's everywhere.  Second thought:  what a neat way to tote around what might otherwise be a boring lunch assortment.

Think about it:  "A turkey and cheese sandwich again?" [sad face] turns into "Hooray! I'm eating the same old sandwich for lunch again, but now it's fun because I'm carrying it around in this cool metal container! Plus, I'm saving the planet!" [smug happy face]

So here's what I'm considering purchasing.  There are so many cool lunch boxes out there.  This is going to be difficult!

Perfect for toting around smores supplies!

For the Dr. Who fan who has everything.

This just makes me feel like a kid again.  :)

So girly, but with a hipster vintage vibe.

I've always loved her outfit.  Girl Power!

Google Earth As Art

I don't get easily excited about interior decorating, but this is way too awesome not to share!  German designer David Hanauer has found a way to turn Google Earth images into unique carpet patterns.  While they are a bit too modern for my home, I love their originality.  I've never seen anything like it before!  (hat tip: IncredibleThings.com)

Celebratory Sangria

The big news this week is that I got a new job!  I'm going to be managing the marketing programs for a start-up company here in the Seattle area and I couldn't be happier about it.  I just found out that I start on Monday so thankfully, I still have some time to mentally prepare myself for the demands of the job.

So far my mental preparations have included making a pitcher of my secret sangria (recipe below) and buying myself a nice bouquet of flowers.  Things are looking up! ;)

Shelbey's Not-So-Secret Sangria Recipe:
  • 1 lime, rind removed and sliced in quartered circles
  • 1 lemon, rind removed and sliced in quartered circles
  • 1 orange, rind removed and sliced in quartered circles
  • 1 plum, sliced in cubes
  • 1 apple, sliced in cubes
  • 6 strawberries, sliced in quarters
  • 1 1/2 cups of Mt. Gay rum
  • 1 cup of orange juice
  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar (can also use Sugar in the Raw)
1) Mix the sugar, fruit and rum together in a pitcher.  Put into the refrigerator for 2 to 4 hours.
2) Add the wine when ready to serve
3) Pour a glass and enjoy! Be sure to scoop the fruit into your glass for added texture and taste.  Serves 6   people.

*For a less alcoholic mix, replace the rum with juice.

JELL-O Mold Competition

If you've never heard of The JELL-O Mold Competition, you don't know what you're missing! (Admittedly, I only recently discovered the event myself so I didn't know what I was missing either.)

The NYC-based competition has been around since 2009.  It's goal is to gather together top-notch creative talent to help prove the point that "food is the universal language of design." And what better medium to use than JELL-O, a favorite among cafeteria lunch lines and senior citizen picnics alike?

Here's this year's grand prize winner, Jelly Fishin'.

But the coolest use of JELL-O, in my opinion, is the JelTone.  It's a fully functional piano made almost entirely from tiny molded JELL-O squares.  Listen to the sweet, soothing melodies it puts out. So cool!
